Plus, I wouldn't mind spending summers with Jeremiah and Conrad. This is one of my favorite books of the summer because it so fully evokes the feeling of freedom and possibilities that summer brings. She plays tennis and she writes stories but neither of those things define her more importantly, she's a girl in the middle of growing up, faced with tough decisions and the fear that this summer will irrevocably change her life for the worse. The part that I loved the most though was that Belly wasn't shaped by one talent. Jenny Han captures the innocence of a first love and the encroaching realities of adulthood. Belly has had a crush on Conrad for most of her life, mostly just a silly little girl's crush on a boy who has been the hero of her summers. Reading it, you can feel the sand between your toes and the rush of a summer night's kiss. The Summer That I Turned Pretty is filled with the nostalgia of summer and youth. Jeremiah and Conrad have shared every summer with her but this summer everything changes. She's afraid that this summer will be different, that the two boys that she's know forever will be different. She even starts to hope that maybe Conrad might see her in that more grown-up way, too. Belly is about to turn 16, and boys are starting to notice her, including a very nice one in the beach town who doesn’t treat her like a little girl. This summer, though, her dad isn't going and Belly's appearance has changed a lot since last summer. This summer, however, starts to feel different. Every June, she and her parents head to her mom's best friend's beach house and they stay until August. I guess I will just have to wait til next summer. Some of Belly's best memories were made in the summer. I want to know what happens with Belly and Conrad. This book is the first of a planned trilogy, Han leaves you hanging which…argghh…is totally frustrating. The only thing I didn’t like about this book is the ending. Tensions mount in this threesome when this other dynamic is thrown into the fray. Conrad though he has been always a dark and brooding guy has become even more so especially when he sees Belly with another guy. The brotherly teasing that they did to her unmercifully for years as taken on more flirtatious undertones. The Summer I Turned Pretty is an emotional roller coaster as readers join Belly on all of the ups and downs in what becomes a pivotal summer. Han's prose is as gentle and comforting as a warm summer breeze as Belly narrates this story and shares flashbacks from some of her favorite summer memories. For years though Jeremiah and Conrad treated Belly like a kid sister but this year they start to look at her in a whole new light. The Summer I Turned Pretty is the first book in Han's Summer trilogy. The boys are treating her differently too. At first Belly can’t put her finger on it but she knows something is up. This year though things at the beach house are little bit different. They are like a big happy family except Belly is totally in love with Conrad and has been for the longest time. Every fourth chapter is a glimpse into Belly’s past summers with Jeremiah and Conrad at the beach starting at age 10. That summer house is where she finds the most joy. Starting in the winter, she would be counting down the days until the summer, the days until she was in that house again, the days that she can see Jeremiah and Conrad again. Ahhh memories….Įvery summer Isabel aka “Belly” and her family head to Cousins Beach to spend time with her mother’s best friend Susannah and her two boys, Jeremiah and Conrad. It was the boy next door for me that made my heart swoon and I looked forward every year to frolicking in the ocean, the bonfires and the clam bakes and of course seeing him. I could totally relate having spent many a summer at Fire Island growing up. What makes this book a perfect summer read? For one thing the story takes place in the summer in a beach community but what really makes it a great beach read is that the author Jenny Han spins a tale about growing up, coming into yourself and the ups and downs of first love with a few other drama filled moments thrown in to round out the story. Don’t forget to use the sunblock first cause I guarantee you will lose yourself in this book and forget to do it later. Go down to the beach, spread out your big beach blanket and start reading The Summer I Turned Pretty by Jenny Han. This summer, though, her dad isnt going and Bellys appearance has changed a lot since last summer. Every June, she and her parents head to her moms best friends beach house and they stay until August. In my hands I have another perfect summer read. (Simon & Schuster, Hardcover, 2009) Rating: Some of Bellys best memories were made in the summer.
